Lithium is the lightest of all metals with a density approximately half that of water and it is always found as a compound with other minerals due to its high levels of chemical activity when by itself. Lithium and its compounds have several industrial applications, including heat-resistant glass, lubricants, ceramics, as an additive in cements and tile adhesives, high strength-to-weight alloys used in aircraft, lithium batteries and lithium-ion batteries.

Lithium’s electrochemical reactivity and other unique prosperities have resulted in many commercial lithium products. Lithium’s organometallic nature is ideal for use in battery applications since it has the highest electric output per unit weight of any battery material. Battery manufacturers are increasingly moving to lithium-based batteries from other battery materials for use in several lithium-ion battery applications such as electric vehicles, watches, portable computers and wireless devices.

Below is a chart comparing the Volumetric and Gravimetric Energy Densities of the most widely used battery grade materials. The results stipulate that Lithium is the preferred battery material for developing smaller, lighter batteries. Yet the industry is still in great need of cells that offer higher performance and higher charge/discharge rates, all at a much lower cost. Targray can help battery manufacturers continue to grow this technology by offering a stable supply of both Lithium Carbonate and Hydroxide Monohydrate.
