What is Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) and how is it produced?

RNG, also known as biomethane, is a purified form of biogas derived from organic materials such as agricultural waste, landfills, wastewater, and animal manure. It is produced through anaerobic digestion or thermal gasification. In anaerobic digestion, microorganisms break down organic matter in the absence of oxygen, producing biogas, which is then cleaned and refined to increase methane content and remove impurities, resulting in RNG. Thermal gasification involves converting organic material into syngas, which can then be further refined into RNG.

Is RNG fully renewable?

Yes, RNG is a renewable resource. It is generated from organic waste materials that are continuously replenished, such as food waste, agricultural residues, and other biomass. The production of RNG captures and utilizes methane that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere, contributing to its renewable and sustainable nature.

What are the primary uses of RNG?

RNG can be used in all applications where conventional natural gas is used. This includes:

  • Heating and cooling: RNG can be used for residential, commercial, and industrial heating and cooling systems.
  • Electricity generation: It can be utilized in power plants to generate electricity.
  • Transportation: RNG can be used as a vehicle fuel, particularly for natural gas vehicles (NGVs), including buses, trucks, and other fleet vehicles.
  • Industrial processes: It can serve as a feedstock or fuel in various industrial processes, offering a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels.

What are the environmental benefits of using RNG?

RNG offers significant environmental benefits, including:

  • Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions: By capturing methane from organic waste, RNG prevents this potent greenhouse gas from entering the atmosphere. When used as a fuel, RNG also has a lower carbon footprint compared to conventional fossil fuels.
  • Waste management: RNG production helps manage organic waste, reducing landfill use and promoting waste-to-energy solutions.
  • Renewable energy contribution: RNG contributes to the renewable energy mix, supporting the transition to cleaner energy sources.
