About the Desi Chickpea

Desi chickpeas are smaller in size than the common domesticated chickpea, with a thick, wrinkled, dark colored seed coat. They have a higher fiber content than their counterparts and are primarily produced in Australia, Canada, Myanmar, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Malawi.

The leading Desi chickpea destination markets today are India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. In India, Desi chickpeas are also known as Bengal gram, Indian Cheickpeas or kala chana. They are mainly used in dhal, sauces, puffed or ground into flour.

Desi chickpeas are a relatively sustainable food crop that enrich soil with nitrogen, which contributes to lower fertilizer usage in farming. With over 20 percent protein, they offer a nutritious alternative to meat and require fewer inputs to grow. The crop is also a rich source of complex carbohydrates, fiber, minerals and vitamins.

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), increasing our focus on farming sustainable pulse crops like chickpeas could contribute to reducing the world’s carbon footprint, alleviating food crises, and keeping soils healthy.
