What is Rice Bran Oil?

Rice bran oil is extracted from the outer bran or husk of rice grains. Because of its high smoke point, it is useful for high-heat cooking and is often used in various cuisines of South and East Asian countries.

In addition to its culinary uses and unique flavor, rice bran oil has a range of health benefits that are supported by research. It is highly recommended by the American Heart Association and the World Health Organization (WHO) as an effective cooking oil option to maintain cholesterol levels.

Rice bran oil contains heart-healthy unsaturated fatty acids-Polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats at an approximate 1:1 ratio. Its high smoke point of 232 C and rich array of essential nutrients and antioxidants make it a suitable cooking oil option for health-conscious consumers.

Benefits of Rice Bran Oil

Heart Healthy

The phytochemicals and antioxidants present in rice bran oil make it a valued ‘heart healthy’ edible oil for regular consumption.

Blood Sugar

Rice bran oil has been found to support the management of blood sugar levels through the improvement of insulin resistance in users. Its rich antioxidants help combat the damages caused by free radicals.

Anti-inflammatory Effects

Rice bran oil contains a host of plant compounds  with significant anti-inflammatory effects. Oryzanol and tocotrienols are active rice bran oil compounds known to suppress the action of several inflammation-causing enzymes. The powerful anti-inflammatory properties of rice bran oil can reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

Cancer Prevention

Studies suggest that tocotrienols can help control the growth of cancer forming cells in the breast, lung, ovary, liver, brain and pancreas. They may also contribute to minimizing the harmful effects of exposure to ionizing radiation.

Immune System Health

Rice bran oil is rich in antioxidants and potent plant compounds like phytosterols, polysaccharides, minerals and trace minerals including magnesium, selenium, zinc, vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids. These compounds have been found to bolster immunity and reduce infection risk in humans.

How is Rice Bran Oil Extracted?

Rice bran is the very thin layer of brown rice and most nutritious part. Rice bran oil is manufactured from the inner husk and germ of brown rice. It has a mild nutty and neutral taste and remains stable when exposed to high temperature.

Rice bran oil is extracted by chemical solvent process or pressed directly from rice bran (for smaller quantity requirements). The four main steps involved in rice bran oil extraction are described below in the following section.

Material Preparation

Rice bran is screened, graded and sorted. The product is then steam-heated to temperatures above 100 celsius to prevent lipase hydrolysis reactions prior to extraction.

Oil Extraction

The crude rice bran oil is extracted mechanically or chemically depending on the volume involved. Once the rice bran is stabilized, its oil is removed.

Refining

Once extracted, the crude rice bran oil is further processed to remove free fatty acids. The resulting oil is suitable for agricultural purposes.

Steam Distillation

The final step in the extracting process involves the removal of  residual free fatty acids and undesirable flavours. The fully processed rice brain oil is then packaged into retail bottles, food service pails or large storage containers for distribution.
